Getting to the Roots of Tanzania

  • Rob's view:
one of Africa's must see destinations
  • Landscape:
the greatest plains on earth that rise to Mt. Kilimanjaro and Ngorongoro, world heritage sites, intimate wilderness areas and white sandy beaches
  • Activities:
game drives, walking and camping safaris to excellent boating, fishing and diving
  • Wildlife:
the largest herds of wildebeest and zebra on earth, elephant and buffalo galore in the south and chimps in the west, sitatunga - it's all here
  • Big-5:
    yes
  • Accommodation:
larger sophisticated lodges in the north to small exclusive old-style bush camps in the south
  • Known for:
the Serengeti migration, Ngorogoro Crater, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar
  • Don't miss:
the migration, a balloon safari, Ngorongoro Crater, Katavi, a walking safari and the chimps
  • Wet season:
    November till May
  • Dry season:
January and February. June till October (many small camps close for March/April in the south)
  • Price point:
considerably from budget to over-priced. Prices do not dictate quality
  • N.B:
beware of whom you book through. Many tour operators buy into standard set departure trips in the north where you can feel you're on a milk run with the masses and a tired guide bumping around in a mini bus. A private driver-guide and your own 4x4 or flying makes for a completely different experience and is well worth the extra cost.
